Old electricity meter box becomes raw material again

Fluvius enters into a partnership with Vanheede to embed the circular economy in waste management

Within the Green Deal Circular Procurement, Fluvius wanted to tackle the internal vision on waste.

A project was chosen that involved more than 900 tonnes of transparent plastic (polycarbonate) used in the covers of outdated electricity meters. The chance of the project being successful was estimated to be high, and that’s an important point if you want to commit to changing in mentality.

The goals proved to be realistic. An important factor in this success was a partnership model with Vanheede, which involved the active sharing of thoughts and a search for a circular solution. The recycling options were limited by the flame retardants present. Eventually a solution was found in which the lids were processed into a granulate that could be reused as raw material.
